Sudan Democracy Action Project

Video By: Mohammed Elmukhtar & Mohammed Galal

The ongoing war in Sudan has had profound consequences for the country’s environment. This short video examines the environmental impact of the war in Sudan, emphasizing how the conflict has disrupted ecosystems, worsened pre-existing vulnerabilities, and created new environmental threats.

As a result of the war, forests, water resources, and wildlife habitats have been severely affected. Agricultural lands are being abandoned, rivers and wetlands are under stress, and soil erosion has accelerated, all of which threaten long-term environmental sustainability. These disruptions not only affect biodiversity but also have direct implications for local communities whose livelihoods depend on natural resources.

The video also presents practical solutions for decision-makers, researchers, and humanitarian practitioners. By integrating policy interventions, community-based approaches, and international support, it is possible to mitigate the environmental damage caused by the conflict. These recommendations include promoting sustainable land management, restoring critical ecosystems, and ensuring that emergency relief programs consider environmental protection as a core priority.

In addition, the video highlights lessons from other conflict-affected regions. Countries facing similar challenges have successfully combined humanitarian responses with environmental protection strategies, demonstrating that even in times of war, ecosystems can be safeguarded through careful planning and collaborative action.

For policymakers, civil society, and international organizations, this video serves as a critical resource for understanding how conflict and environmental degradation are intertwined. By raising awareness, supporting research, and promoting environmentally conscious interventions, Sudan can work toward preserving its natural resources and building resilience for the future.
