Overview
At the beginning of 2024, AMEL organized a series of forums and discussion sessions aimed at addressing the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan. The crisis, deepened by over a year of conflict, has led to widespread food shortages, the displacement of millions, and numerous other humanitarian challenges.
These sessions provided a platform for sharing insights and engaging with both local and international actors. The goal was to strengthen international support for grassroots initiatives, with a particular focus on innovative solutions to support Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) and other community-led responses that have proven effective in meeting the urgent needs of Sudanese communities..
Objectives of the Forums
- Learning from successful experiences: Participants explored case studies from international actors such as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and the Danish Refugee Council (DRC), which have successfully supported refugees in remote areas despite significant logistical challenges.
- Identifying practical solutions: Participants brainstormed innovative approaches to simplify donor requirements and design funding mechanisms tailored to the decentralized nature of grassroots initiatives and ERRs.
- Building trust and resilience: Discussions emphasized strengthening trust between the international community and grassroots initiatives, encouraging flexible funding models, and ensuring accountability through simplified reporting systems.
